Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Faruque Hassan has sought support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in developing Bangladeshs logistics sector to meet the countrys growing demand.
Faruque made the request when an ADB delegation met him at BGMEA complex in the capital on Thursday. He said developed logistics lead to reduced lead time and costs, thereby boosting trade competitiveness, said a press release.
The discussions primarily centered on development of Bangladeshs ready-made garment (RMG) industry with the economic implications of the countrys LDC graduation status in 2026.
The ADB delegation, comprising key experts in various fields, included Atul Sanganeria, Economic Corridor and Logistics Expert; Rina Oberai, Senior Private Sector Development Specialist; Md. Rabiul Islam Rabi, Research Analyst; and Barun Kumar Dey, Economist.
A key point of discussion in the meeting was the important role of infrastructure and logistics development in sustaining the growth of Bangladeshs manufacturing sector, with a specific emphasis on RMG industry.
Faruque presented an overview of the expanding manufacturing sector in Bangladesh, particularly at a time Bangladesh is working for achieving the goal of $100 billion export earnings from garment by 2030.
Achieving such a significant export target would necessitate a substantial increase in trade volume; the BGMEA President underscoring the importance of upgrading the countrys infrastructure and logistics, especially sea ports.
Expressing gratitude for ADBs financial assistance in the ongoing skills development program in Bangladesh, the BGMEA chief highlighted the impacts of technology and artificial intelligence on manufacturing sector.
Stressing the need to match skills with evolving industrial production patterns, he called upon the ADB to extend its support in preparing a skilled workforce, particularly for in apparel industry, to sustain the countrys competitiveness in changing global landscape.
