Untimely erosion by Padma devours houses at Bagha

BAGHA, RAJSHAHI, Mar 11: Houses of four men were devoured by the Padma River in Bagha Upazila of the district in a week.

A visit on Saturday at 11am found this scene at Nich Polashi Char at Chakrajapur Union in the middle of the Padma River in the upazila.

In the last several years, five chars in the middle Padma got disappeared; three government primary schools were shifted. At present, Chakrajapur High School at erosion risk.

The houses eroded due to the untimely erosion belonged to Chhattar Ali, Badsha Ali, Sahadul Islam, and Sultan Ali. They have taken shelter in other places.

In the last year, hundreds of families lost their houses. The dwellers went to other  places.

A dweller of Kalidaskhali Char Siddiq Bepari was seen sitting on the bank of Padma, with his hand on the head.

 In the last one week, his five bigha maize field was eroded.

Chakrajapur Char at Ward No. 6, Dadpur Char at Ward No. 7, Polashi Fatehpur Char at Ward No. 9, Kalidaskhali Char at Ward No. 5, and Choumadia Char at Ward No. 3 under Chakrajapur Union disappeared.

Chakrajapur, Purbakalidaskhali and Choumadia government primary schools have been shifted.

At present, Chakrajapur High School and Bazar, Chakrajapur at Ward No. 4, Kalidaskhali at Ward No. 3, Laxminagar at Ward No. 8, Atarpara Char at Ward No. 1, 70 per cent of Choumadia Char at Ward No. 2, 80 per cent of Kalidaskhali Char at Ward No. 5 and 70 per cent of Purba Kalidaskhali Char at Ward No. 6 are under the erosion threat.

Chakrajapur Union Chairman DM Babul Monwar Dewan said, a list of 250 victim families in the last year has been given to the administration; 50 more families have fallen into the erosion threat; 150 electricity pools have been lifted; assisted by former state minister for foreign affairs Shariar Alam, MP,  Tk 50,000 was given to each 48 families;   an effort is going on to give government donations to remaining ones.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer  (UNO) Tarikul Islam said, the matter was not known to him. After inquiry, he will take action, the UNO added.
