Dhaka-Aricha highway was blocked for three hours following the death of a
Dhaka North City Corporation (
DNCC) cleaner at an early hours.
A speeding pick-up van hit Amena Begum, 45, near Gabtoli bus terminal on her way to workplace around 5:45am on Thursday and she died on the spot, said DMP Assistant Commissioner Mofizur Rahman Palash.
Shortly after the death news spread, several DNCC cleaners took to the street and blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway in protest which created a huge tailback on both sides of the road.
No vehicles were able to enter the capital through Gabtoli from 6am-9am. The effects of the blockade on the key thoroughfare stretching the tailback till Asad Gate.
The truck was seized and its driver was arrested.
Amena Begum, wife of Md Abdul Karim, was a resident of 4 number ally of the city corporation.
To avert any untoward situation, two platoons of police have been deployed in the area.
Senior officers from the DMP Mirpur Division visited the scene.
However, the cleaners vowed to continue protest until their demands, which include provision of risk allowances, were met.
