An elderly man and a woman were murdered in separate incidents in two districts - Sunamganj and Jhenidah, in two days.
SUNAMGANJ: A septuagenarian man was beaten to death allegedly by his nephew in Dowarabazar Upazila of the district on Thursday morning over a land dispute.
The incident took place in Fatehpur Village of the upazila at around 8:30 am.
The deceased was identified as Iskandar Ali, 70, a resident of the village.
Police and local sources said the deceaseds nephew Ekhlas Mia along with Akkas, Gafur and some of his associates indiscriminately beat Iskandar Ali on the bank of a pond in the area in the morning over a land dispute, leaving him dead on the spot.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
However, the law enforces have arrested Ekhlas Mia in connection with the murder.
Preparation to file a case against the involved people was underway, said Yasmin, daughter-in-law of the deceased.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dowarabazar Police Station (PS) Badrul Hasan confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.
JHENIDAH: A woman was murdered by her drug addict son in Maheshpur Upazila of the district on Wednesday.
The incident took place in Keshabpur Village under Swarupkathi Union of the upazila in the evening.
The deceased was identified as Shyamoli Khatun, 42, wife of Anichur Rahman, a resident of the village.
Police and local sources said the deceaseds son Ratan is a drug addict. On Wednesday, he demanded some money to his mother for buying drugs. As Shyamoli Khatun refused to give him the money, Ratan hit his mother on the head with a stick out of anger. Shyamoli Khatun was critically injured at that time.
The family members then rescued Shyamoli Khatun and rushed her to neighbouring Jibonnagar Hospital, where she was declared dead by the on-duty doctor.
Being informed, police recovered the body. However, the law enforcers detained the accused at night.
Maheshpur PS OC Mahabubur Rahman confirmed the incident, adding that filing of a murder case is underway in this connection.
