Gazipur gas cylinder blast

Death toll rises to 2 as another victim dies

One more patient, who sustained burn injuries in a gas cylinder blast in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur on Wednesday, succumbed to his injuries at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on Saturday morning, raising the death toll to two.

The deceased was Mansur Ali Akond, 32, mason by profession of Saldah Uttarpara village in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district. He was a resident of Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur district.

Mansur, with 100 per cent burns, breathed his last while being treated at the intensive care unit of the institute around 8:30 am on Saturday, said Hossain Imam, assistant director of the hospital.
On Friday, another injured Solaiman Mollah, 45, who suffered 95 per cent burns, died at the hospital, he added.

Twenty nine victims of the cylinder blast incident are now undergoing treatment at the hospital and the condition of at least a dozen more patients are very critical, hospital sources said. Meanwhile, one has been discharged after receiving treatment.

On March 13, at least 35 people, including women and children, were injured after a gas cylinder caught fire following a leak in Kaliakair of Gazipur.

They were first taken to a nearby hospital first. Later, they were shifted to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
