Detective Branch (DB) of Police have arrested a woman in connection with stealing mobile phones and other valuables attending various programmes, including seminars, at hotels, clubs in the capital. The arrested was identified as Zobaida Sultana, 44, a daughter of a former joint secretary.
Harun Or Rashid, Additional Commissioner of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), informed at a press conference held at his office on Mintu Road in the capital on Saturday.
On March 3, Zobaida attended a seminar on Gynaecological Oncology and had stolen a mobile phone, bag and ornaments of Dr Farhana Huq. She sold all the valuables, but transferred the WhatsApp number of Dr Farhana to her mobile phone, he said.
Since then, in disguise of Dr Farhana she prescribed different patients and had taken a handsome amount of money from them.
On March 12, a case was filed with the Ramna Police Station in this regard. Detective branch of police had started secret investigation in connection with the case. After investigation detectives arrested Zobaida on Friday.
They also seized 16 womans handbags, four mobile phone sets, five credit cards of different banks, ornaments, cards of different super shops and four pen drives, the DB chief said.
The DB chief said Zobaida Sultana has been involved in this crime for 12 years. She attended programmes, including seminars, at elite clubs, including Dhaka Club, Gulshan Club, hotels using various identities with an intention to steal valuables.
Till now, she had stolen 700 to 800 mobile phones. She mainly targeted women jobholders, and university students. Harun said during primary interrogation, Zobaida has confessed to her involvement in stealing.
He further said Zobiadas father is a former joint secretary, her elder sister is an official of a telecom company.
Her family discontinued their relationship with Zobiada for this kind of her behaviours, the DB chief said, adding that her current husband is a Saudi Arabia expatriate, who helped Zobaida in selling the stolen goods.
