48 shops burnt in Narsingdi, Laxmipur, Mymensingh

At least 48 shops were gutted by fire in separate incidents in three districts- Narsingdi, Laxmipur and Mymensingh, in four days.

NARSINGDI: At least 30 shops were gutted by fire that broke out at a cloth market in Sheikherchar-Baburhat of the district early Sunday.

Quoting the locals, Deputy Assistant Director of Narsingdi Fire Service Station Shimul Mohammad Rafi said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at around 1:15 am at Zia Uddin Market and engulfed the adjacent area soon.

Being informed, nine units of Fire Service personnel from Narsingdi, Madabdi and Dhaka rushed there in phases, and brought the flame under control by 3 am.  

He further said the estimated damage in the fire could not be ascertained immediately but the affected businessmen primarily claimed that goods worth about Tk 10 crore were completely damaged due to the fire.

Meanwhile, M Maniruzzaman, general secretary of the Sheikherchar-Baburhat Market Banik Samity, said that the market is known as the largest cloth market in the country and had an accommodation of nearly 3,500 shops where only clothes were being sold.

Narsingdi Deputy Commissioner Dr Badiul Alam, Superintend of Police Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman and other district officials visited the scene immediately after the incident.

KAMALNAGAR, LAXMIPUR: Eight shops were burnt in Kamalnagar Upazila of the district on Saturday.

The incident took place at Bolirpole Bazar under Char Martin Union at dawn.

Local sources said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a cloth store of one Anwar Hossain in the market at around 5:30 am, and it soon engulfed the adjacent shops.

On information, Fire Service personnel rushed in and controlled the blaze after an hour of effort.

In the meantime, eight shops were gutted by the fire. The affected traders claimed that goods worth about Tk 1.5 crore were completely destroyed at that time.

Kamalnagar Fire Service Station Team Leader Abdul Majid confirmed the incident.

NANDAIL, MYMENSINGH: At least 10 shops were gutted by fire in Nandail Upazila of the district early Friday.

The incident took place at Nandail Super Market at around 2:30 am.

Local sources said the fire began at a shop in the market, and soon engulfed the adjacent shops.

On information, four units of Fire Service rushed in and controlled the blaze after about two hours of frantic effort.

In the meantime, 10 shops were fully burnt. The affected traders claimed that goods worth about Tk 1.5 crore were completely destroyed due to the fire.   

However, the actual reason behind the fire could not be known immediately.

Nandail Fire Service Station Team Leader Rezaul Karim confirmed the incident.

Nandail Upazila Nirbahi Officer Arun Krishna Pal said that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.
