Miscreants gouged out a local Juba League leaders eye in Sadar Upazila of the district on Monday night.
The victim was identified as Kamal Hossain, the president of Awami Juba Leagues Ward-3 Unit under Bashikpur Union and a fruit trader of a local market.
Police and locals said Kamal came under attack on his way to Poddar Bazar from his house around 8:30 pm.
The miscreants obstructed his way, attacked him with rods and gouged out his right eye when he reached Nandigram, leaving him critically injured, they said.
Hearing his screams, locals rescued him and took him initially to Sadar Hospital. He was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) due to his critical condition.
Dr Anowar Hossain, resident medical officer of Sadar Hospital, said there were marks of injuries on several parts of his body including head, face, nose and eyes.
Due to his critical condition, he was referred to DMCH, he said.
Acting Officer-in-Charge of Chandraganj Police Station Md Emdadul Hoque said there had long been a dispute between the victim and a fertiliser trader of Poddar Bazar. This dispute might have led to the attack.
