Two doctors including a personal assistant of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) vice-chancellor Professor Dr Sharfuddin Ahmed were on Saturday (March 23) ousted from the university after being beaten up by colleagues.

Teachers belonging to the BSMMU unit of Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad (Swachip) staged demonstration in front of the VC's office on Saturday raising the allegation of corruption against the VC through giving appointment to people. The university's officials, employees and nurses also joined the demonstration.
At that time, the agitated doctors ousted the VC's personal assistant Dr Md Russel Ahmed from the his office physically assulting him. Besides, the BSMMU's Super Specialised Hospital's additional director Dr Rasul Amin Shipon was forced to leave the university after assaulting him on the same charges.

Admitting about the beating of personal assistant, Professor Dr Sharfuddin Ahmed said, "I have heard that they have beaten several people. I will talk to the law enforcers in this regard."

Professor Md Ariful Islam Joarder Tito, member secretary of the BSMMU unit of Swachip, who has been leading the movement, alleged that a gazette notification was issued about appointing a new vice-chancellor at the BSMMU. Usually, the former VC performs his routine duties after the appointment of new VC. But, the outgoing VC has become desperate to appoint more than 100 doctors, employees and some 30 administrative officers. Everybody suspects that there were huge transactions of money behind those appointments.

Expressing anonimity, a university official said the two ousted doctors were directly involved in all kinds of underhand dealings, irregularities and corruption happened in the BSMMU over the last three years. A group of angry doctors put those two doctors on board a CNG autorickshaw on Saturday after punching, kicking and beating them at their offices.

It may be mentioned that Professor Dr Sharfuddin Ahmed's tenure as vice-chancellor is going to be expired on March 28 next. Meanwhile, former Director General of the Directorate of Health Professor Dr Deen Md Nurul Huque was appointed as the vice-chancellor of BSMMU on March 11 last.
