Road mishaps claim five lives in five districts

Five people including a woman were killed and another was injured in separate road accidents in five districts - Dinajpur, Rajbari, Gopalganj, Laxmipur and Barishal, in three days.

PARBATIPUR, DINAJPUR: A police constable was killed in a road accident in Parbatipur Upazila of the district on Saturday night.

The accident took place in Chandapara area on the Parbatipur-Phulbari highway under the upazila around 11 pm.

The deceased was identified as Hridoy Roy, a constable of Dinajpur Police Lines.

According to police and local sources, Hridoy Roy was heading towards Parbatipur from Fulbari at night riding on a motorcycle.

 On the way, a speedy truck ran over his motorcycle in Chandapara area on the Parbatipur-Phulbari highway under the upazila around 11 pm, which left him dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene and sent it to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

It was known that Hridoy was listening to music with earphones on when the truck rammed his bike.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Parbatipur Police Station (PS) Chittya Ranjan Roy confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.

GOALANDA, RAJBARI: A teenage boy was killed in a road accident in Goalanda Upazila of the district on Saturday afternoon.
The accident took place in Gudhuli Park area of the upazila at around 3:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Shamim Molla, 16, son of Ershad Molla.

He faced the tragic incident after he lost control over the steering of his speedy bike and hit a roadside pole, said locals.

Locals rescued him in critical condition and took to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex first, where the on-duty physicians referred him to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital in Faridpur. Then Shamim Molla was being shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) from there, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the DMCH.

Being informed, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceaseds family members without an autopsy as per their request.

The deceaseds father Md Ershad Molla said, "My son had been insisting me to buy him a motorbike for a few months. When I didn agree with him, he threatened me with suicide. I didn want to lose my only son, so I bought him a motorcycle last month."

"This accident would not have happened if he had not bought the motorcycle," said the father.

Goalanda Ghat PS OC Pranbandhu Chandra Biswas confirmed the death matter, adding that the body was handed over to the deceaseds family members without an autopsy upon their request.

GOPALGANJ: A local leader of Awami League (AL) was killed after being hit by a motorcycle on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Sadar Upazila of the district on Friday.

Deceased Ranjit Kumar Barai Gama, 70, was a vice-president of District Unit of AL and also special public prosecutor of District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal. He was the son of Kalipad Barai, a resident of Rupahati Village under Tungipara Upazila in the district.

Quoting locals, Bhatipara Highway PS Inspector Md Abul Hashem said Ranjit Kumar went to Mandartola area of the upazila on Friday to visit the college established by him which is under-construction right now. On his way back to the house from the college, a speedy motorbike hit the AL leader at around 5 pm, which left him critically injured.

He was then rescued and taken to Gopalganj General Hospital, where the on-duty physicians referred him to the DMCH as his condition deteriorated further.

Later on, he succumbed to his injuries at around 8 pm on the way to the DMCH.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Gopalganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Gopalganj Sadar PS OC Mohammad Anisur Rahman confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.

KAMALNAGAR, LAXMIPUR: An elderly woman was killed in a road accident in Kamalnagar Upazila of the district on Thursday night.

The accident took place in Char Jangalia area on the Ramgati-Laxmipur regional road of the upazila at around 10:30 pm.

The identity of the deceased, aged about 65, could not be known immediately.

Police and local sources said an unidentified vehicle hit the woman in Char Jangalia area on the Ramgati-Laxmipur road at around 10:30 pm, leaving him seriously injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed her to Kamalnagar Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the woman dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Kamalnagar PS OC Md Tahidul Islam confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers are trying to identify the deceased.
BARISHAL: A motorcyclist was killed and another injured in a road accident in the city on Thursday.

The accident took place in the morning in front of the headquarters of RAB-8 at Rupatali in the city.

The deceased was identified as Md Riazuddin Sumon, 45, son of ASP Syed Ali, a resident of New Bhatikhana Road area in the city.

The injured person is Md Bellal.

Quoting locals, Kotwali Model PS OC Arichul Haque said Sumon and Bellal were heading towards Rupatali Bus Terminal from Kalijira Bridge in the city in the morning riding on a motorcycle.

On the way, a covered van coming from the opposite direction hit their motorcycle in front of the headquarters of RAB-8, leaving the duo seriously injured.

Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Sumon dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceaseds family members without an autopsy as per their request.

The covered van driver fled the scene soon after the accident along with vehicle.

Police are trying to identify the covered van and arrest its driver, the OC added.
