PATHARGHATA, BARGUNA, Mar 26: An iron bridge over a canal of the Holta River in Patharghata Upazila of the district was broken down on March 19, after being hit by a sand-laden cargo boat.

The bridge is adjacent to Sonar Bangla High School. The bridge was built by the local government engineering department (LGED).

About 1,500 people including students of Sonar Bangla High School, Shotokor Sonar Bangla Primary School, madrasa and college have fallen into communication suffering.

The accident took place at about 10am. After being hit by the cargo bulkhead, the bridge broke in its middle part, but caused no casualty. Driver and his assistants swam to the canal bank. But the broken part of the bridge fell on the bulkhead, making it stranded.

Locals and eyewitnesses said, the bridge was deplorable previously. The LGED made it fit for communication by patchwork, they added.

A local dweller Naim Talukdar said, the accident occurred due to lack of care by the unskilled cargo driver.

At present, the communication is taking place at a round of about two kilometre. Driver and labourers fled away.

Patharghata Upazila Engineer Chandan Kumar Chakraborti said, a quick step can be taken due to lack of allocated money; after estimating damages, a proposal will be sent to the upazila chairman; if fund got, repairing measure will be taken soon.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Roknujjaman Khan over mobile phone said, "After inquiry about which organization built the bridge, repairing measures will be taken quickly. If it has been damaged by the cargo, action will be taken against them."
