Jagannath University (JnU) has started its preparation to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bengali New Year, acknowledging rickshaw painting as part of UNESCOs global intangible cultural heritage on Sunday.

Students of the Fine Arts Faculty painted murals on the wall next to the second gate of the university in the style of dilapidated rickshaw paintings in preparation for the festival.

Regarding the overall matter, Mohammad Alptagin Tushar, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, said that rickshaws and rickshaw paintings have been recognised as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCOs. Thats why the wall paintings have been.

There will also be large-scale rickshaw paintings in the Mangal Shobhajatra, he added.

According to the organizers, an integral part of the New Year celebrations will be the rickshaw paintings. The murals painted by the students also depict various kinds of presentations, including flowers, fish, boats, tigers, and peacocks. Attractive and eye-catching images from the various kinds of paintings drawn on rickshaws in the country have been brought to life on the walls with bright colors. The paintings have been drawn from the wall of the main gate of the university to parts of the second gate and the third gate.

Also, large-scale rickshaw paintings will be featured in the Mangal Shobhajatra on the occasion of Baishakh.

Rickshaw paintings are an integral part of Bengali culture.

The publicity of rickshaws as vehicles started in the late 1930s in the Sutrapur and Wari areas of Dhaka.

However, at that time, it was the era of human-pulled rickshaws. After the partition of 1947, cycle rickshaws started to become popular in Dhaka and other cities of the country. Thats when the journey of rickshaw painting started.

Last year, this art gained international recognition. On December 6, 2023, UNESCO recognised Rickshaw and Rickshaw Painting as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
