Convict Jamal Uddin Sarkar, former chairman of Savar, who fled from the courtroom upon receiving the verdict in Hallmark corruption case Judgement on March 19, surrendered before the trial court on Sunday and sought bail.
After hearing on the bail prayer, Judge Md Abul Kashem of Dhaka Special Judge Court 1 ordered to send him to jail rejecting his bail prayer.
On March 19, Jamal Uddin, the former chairman of Tetuljhora Union Parishad in Hemayetpur, Savar, received a seven-year prison sentence along with Hallmark Group Chairperson Jasmine Islam, Managing Director Tanvir Mahmud and 15 others in the corruption case.
Jamal Uddin, who was on bail, appeared before the court that day. The court sentenced him to seven years in two separate sections. After hearing the sentence, he somehow managed to leave the court premises and went on hiding. Later, the court cancelled his bail and issued an arrest warrant against him.
The ACC filed the case on October 4 in 2012, with the capitals Ramna Police Station. According to the case documents, the 18 accused, including Hallmark Group Managing Director Md Tanvir Mahmud and his wife and company chairman Jasmine Islam, are accused of embezzling Tk 16.50 crore after taking loan of Tk 525.62 crore in the name of a non-existent Max Spinning Mills.
