LALMONIRHAT, Apr 4: A minor child was killed by a teenage boy in Aditmari Upazila of the district recently.
The deceased was identified as Roman Hossain, 5, son of Aminur Islam, a resident of Kholahati Setubazar area in the upazila.
However, police arrested the accused Ashiqur Rahman, 14, son of Muchha Mia of Kholahati Village under Bhadai Union, in this connection. After the arrest, he gave a confessional statement before a court.
Superintend of Police (SP) in Lalmonirhat Saiful Islam confirmed the information at a press briefing at his office in the district town on Tuesday afternoon.
The SP said Roman went missing on March 29 last. His body was found buried half in a tobacco field in the area the next day. Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene.
While investigating the incident, police came to know that the accused Ashiqur Rahman stole a goat owned by one Mokseduls mother of the area about a month back. He then sold the goat after taking it to a local haat. Roman eye-witnessed the incident and disclosed the matter to the people concerned. Following this, an arbitration took place, where Ashiqur was fined Tk 5,000.
Since then, Roman often used to call Ashiqur as goat thief. Angered by this, Ashiqur planned to take revenge against Roman, and following the plan, he took Roman to a tobacco field tactfully on March 29 last, and strangled him there. He then tried to dump the body by burring Roman.
On March 30, locals spotted the body of Roman and informed police.
After investigation, police arrested Ashiqur on April 1 last, the SP added.
Additional SP (ASP) Atiqul Islam and ASP Alamgir Hossain, among other police officials and local journalists from print and electronic media, were also present at the press briefing.
