Two go missing after cargo vessel sinks in Rupsha River

Two persons went missing after a cargo vessel sank in the Rupsha River hitting a pillar of Rupsha Rail Bridge in Khulna district on Sunday.

Inspector Nurul Islam Sheikh, in-charge of Rupsha New Police camp, said the fertilizer-laden cargo vessel named ‘MV Three Light-1’ from Mongla port hit the pillar of the Rupsha rail bridge and sank in the river around 1 pm while heading towards Nauapara.

He said 11 crew members out of 13 managed to swim ashore while two remained missing.

Md Rajib, who was in duty, said suddenly the engine of the vessel became inactive, lost control and hit the pillar. Two crew members went missing during the incident.  
 
Being informed, three teams of river police, Rupsha thana police and Coast Guard are conducting search operations in the river. Due to the inclement weather and up-stream, it became very difficult to locate the cargo vessel and to conduct the search operation.
