BHANDARIA, PIROJPUR, Apr 16: The massgrave along the Pona River in Bhandaria Upazila of the district has been grabbed.

Surroundings of the massgrave have been occupied with different installations. Memories of martyred are set to disappear.

In the 53 years of independence, there has been no effective initiative to raise a monument at the massgrave to recall memories of the martyred.

According to local freedom fighters (FFs), in the 1971 war, Pakistani forces killed 75 freedom-seeking Bangalees at Bhandaria; all bodies were dumped into the Pona River, adjacent to the embankment in front of the Bhandaria Upazila Health Complex. The dumping place of the river emerged as char.

The place was filled and FFs started to observe December 14 as Martyred Intellectual Day, recalling the FFs. Later on, the place or the massgrave started to lose its existence due to grabbing by building different installations.

FF Nezamul Haq Nanna said, "There was palm tree beside the present embankment of the river; Pakistani forces would bring freedom-seeking people to that place; after shooting down, their bodies would be thrown into the river; and the bodies would get floated away. On off-moon night in the month of Bhadra in 1971, we, the  FFs, from the Sundarban via the Pona River, went to Bhandaria Police Station (PS) and looted away weapons of the PS. On March 6 afternoon, we took oath of war after burning the flag of Pakistan, before the historic March 7 Speech. Later on, jointly led by FFs Delwar Hossain Faruq Hawlader and Golam Mostafa Bachchu Hawlader, and few FFs formally hoisted the flag of Bangladesh at Shahid Minar."

FF Khan Enayet Karim of Bhandaria organized FFs, he added. "I and FF A Aziz Sikdar and FF Toyobur Rahman were his associates."
He further said, "Every year we pay tribute to the martyrs on December 14 in candle lights at the massgrave."

One freedom-loving local Md Asaduzaman Asad complaint, one late Parimal Chandra sold Khas land of the massgrave to local Anjan Tailors proprietor Anjan Ray illegally; and Anjan Ray raised houses on that land piece.

"To evict the illegal installations, we, few FFs with their children, tried to knock the door of the administration many times. But due to unknown reasons, it could not be possible to demolish these structures," he added.

Accused Anjan Ray said, "I have legally built the house on purchased land."

President of Upazila FF Children Command Ehsan Hawladar said, it needs to preserve this place; it will bear the history to the next generation.

FF Amir Khasru Mahmud said, "We demand of the administration or MP (Pirojpur-2) Mahiuddin Maharaj to declare raising a monument at the massgrave."

Main organiser of freedom fighting at Bhandaria FF Khan Enayet Karim said, "Making many sacrifices, we have freed this country. We have been trying for about 12 years for constructing a monument at the massgrave. But it could not be possible to raise the monument due to administrative complications and non-cooperation from the locally top political leaders."

Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Administrator of Upazila Muktijoddha Command Council Yasin Arafat Rana said, after talking with different sections, an initiative will be taken to build monument at the massgrave.
