When will BUET return to normality?

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) campus has lost its festive look. Now it looks like a deserted place.

This is because the general students of the university are determined to stay away from participating in academic activities unless attempts to reintroduce student politics on the campus are rejected.

They demand a complete politics-free campus.

On the other hand, the university authorities say they are yet to receive the copy of the High Courts stay order against BUET notification of ban on student politics on the campus.

The university administration is waiting for the stay order and will respond legally, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university Prof Abdul Jabbar Khan told the media.

But what will happen to students who did not appear in all the term final examinations is undecided.

Exam Controller of the university Prof Mohammed Imamul Hassan Bhuiyan told The Daily Observer on Wednesday that it is still undecided how students will retake the examinations that they did not appear at.

In that case, Prof Jabbar said if the students apply to sit for the missed examinations through proper channel, the Academic Council will consider the matter.

Almost 100 per cent of the students of the university boycotted all the term final examinations held on Wednesday and Thursday. Moreover, they announced to boycott all the examinations ahead.

Hence, it is difficult to say when the situation of the university will be normal.

Students Welfare Director Prof Mohammad Al Amin Siddik on Thursday told this correspondent that the matter will be elaborately discussed at the next Academic Council meeting, but he failed to say when the meeting will be arranged.

Political activities at BUET were banned in 2019 following the murder of Abrar Fahad in a residential hall of the university by some BCL leaders and activists.

Despite the prohibition from the administration, a group of BCL workers led by party President Saddam Hussain allegedly organized a political gathering on the campus in the early hours on March 28, sparking anger among general students.

Students found it an attempt to reintroduce politics on the campus in full swing despite the authorities bar, resulting in boycott of all academic activities.

In the face of the students demand, the authorities scrapped the hall seat of Imtiaz Rabby for organizing the political gathering and formed an investigation committee.

On the contrary, BCL slammed the authorities hasty move and filed a writ petition to lift the ban on student politics on the BUET campus and return Rabbys seat to him.

Following the legal move, the High Court stayed the ban order and asked the authorities to reallocate the seat to Rabby.
But students are still optimistic that the BUET authorities will stand by them in the HC for a politics-free campus.
