BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said that the ruling Awami League became more violent after 'seizing power' through 'dummy' elections on January 7.

"In order to cling to the state power through lies, intimidation and mischief, the ruling Awami League are brutally oppressing the BNP and its affiliated bodies and pro-democratic other opposition parties," he said in a statement.

The statement was issued expressing deep concern over the denial of bail to BNP national executive committee assistant secretary for youth affairs Mir Newaz Ali Newaz, also former Dhaka College Students' Union vice-president.

"The occupying Awami government has established a tyrannical regime in the country by denying bail in false and fabricated cases and sending the opposition leaders and activists to jail," Fakhrul said.

He demanded cancellation of the sentence of Nawaz, the withdrawal of the 'false case' filed against him and immediate and unconditional release of him.
"I am deeply concerned about the ongoing imprisonment of opposition leaders and activists in false and fabricated cases with the help of the government, along with the denial of bail," he said.

Addressing a protest rally, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that the fear in the mind of 'illegal’ Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has not over yet.

"This illegal government is standing on the quicksand and the mattress of the government will sink in the sand anytime," he said.

The rally was organised in front of the BNP central office at Naya Paltan in the capital demanding immediate release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and former Chhatra Dal general secretary Habibur Rashid Habib.
