At least 50 shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at Choumuhani bazaar in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali district on Sunday night.

The fire originated around 7.45pm on Sunday, which burnt down assets worth around Tk 3 crore, said witnesses.
On information, seven firefighting units from nearby fire stations rushed there and brought the blaze under control after three hours of attempts, said Md Farid Ahmed, Additional Director of Noakhali Fire Service and Civil Defence Department.

However, locals said the fire broke out at a clothing store and engulfed the adjacent shops soon.

Md Farid Ahmed said that it was assuming that the fire might have originated from an electric short circuit but the actual reason behind the fire and extend of the damage could be known after investigation.
