Two students of Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) were killed and another student was injured when a speeding bus ran over their motorcycle at Rangunia in the port city on Monday.

Later, the general students of CUET staged demonstration by blocking Chattogram-Kaptai highway near their institution under Raujan upazila for about five hours protesting against the death of their two fellows in the accident earlier in the day.

All the three students were coming to the CUET campus from Rangunia riding on a motorcycle, while the bus was going to Chandraghona under Rangunia with passengers on board from Chattogram.

The accident happened around 3:30pm near Selina Quader Chowdhury College on Chattogram-Kaptai Road under Rangunia Police Station in Chattogram.

The three riders of the motorcycle were injured when the bus rammed their bike on the way. Later, two students died. Both the bus and motorcycle was seized. However, the bus driver and helper fled the spot.
The victim were Shanto Saha, a student of the 20th batch of Civil Engineering Department. He was the son of Kajol Saha who hailed from Narsingdi sadar, while Toufiq Hossain, son of Mohammad Delwar Hossain, of the same department. He hailed from Sudharam upazila in Noakhali district.

The student who was injured in the accident was known as Zakaria Himu, a student of the 20th batch of Civil Engineering Department of CUET. He is now undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Chattogram. His leg was broken in the accident. Doctors said he is out of danger.

CUET Deputy Director (Public Relations) Fazlur Rahman said the body of Shanto is in Chattogram Medical College Hospital and Taufiq's body in Evercare Hospital. The bodies will be handed over to the families of the deceased on completion of legal procedures, he added.

As the news of the accident reached the campus under Raujan upazila, about five kilometers from the spot of the accident, general students gathered on the Chattogram-Kaptai road, adjacent to their campus.

The students started blocking the road at about 4:00pm. They chanted slogans demanding justice for their fellows, seizing the bus that hit the motorcycle, arresting the bus driver and his assistants, and their exemplary punishment.

The students also kept three buses confined during their protests. One of the buses was set on fire on the road during the students’ protests.

Two other buses were taken to the campus, witnesses said.
