BD rolls out red carpet for Qatar Emir

Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani arrived Dhaka at the special invitation of Bangladesh President Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for 24 hours to enhance bi-lateral relation at a different higher.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin welcomed Qatar Emir with flower bouquet at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).  A red carpet was rolled out to accord warm reception and a 21-gun salute heralded the Emirs arrival at the HSIA while he was getting down from the aircraft.

The Amir was also taken to the makeshift saluting dais where he was given "a guard of honour" while the national anthems of the two countries were played. The Emir of Qatar inspected the parade.

Ministers including Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, State for Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, chiefs of the three services, principal secretary to the prime minister, foreign secretary, secretaries concerned to the president office and senior military and civil officials were present there.

Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud will pay a courtesy call on the Emir of Qatar today (Tuesday), later Emir will have a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Shimul of the Prime Ministers Office. They will have tete-a-tete (one-to-one) meeting too.

Later, six agreements and five memorandums of understandings (MoUs) are likely to be signed between the two countries during this visit.

Agreements are: avoidance of double taxation and tax evasion, cooperation in legal matters, maritime transport, mutual investment development and protection, transfer of convicted persons and establishment of a joint business council.

Apart from these, five memorandums of understanding (MoUs), including on labour force, higher education and scientific research, and cooperation in diplomatic training are likely to be signed during the visit.

Alongside, the emir will inaugurate a park in Kalshi area of Mirpur under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and a road running from Mirpur ECB Chattar to Kalshi Flyover at 3pm, which will be named after the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, the visiting emirs father and predecessor.

He is scheduled to depart Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by a special flight at 6pm Tuesday while he foreign minister will see him off at the airport.

Qatar recognised Bangladesh as a sovereign state on March 4, 1974 following the 2nd OIC Summit held in February 1974.

Bangladesh opened its diplomatic mission in Doha on June 25, 1975. The State of Qatar reciprocated by opening its diplomatic mission in Dhaka in 1982.

More than 400,000 Bangladeshis work in Qatar and they are appreciated as dedicated and hard working.

Recently the two nations have engaged in extensive economic cooperation in the vital energy sector, as the tiny Gulf state is home to the worlds largest per capita reserves of hydrocarbons, while Bangladesh since 2022 has been a major buyer in the region of LNG (liquefied natural gas) in particular, of which Qatar has been the worlds highest supplier.

He will join a small group of business people meeting then join the courtesy lunch hosted by the President Shahabuddin at Durbar Hall of the Bangabhaban.

The Emir is scheduled to fly for Qatar by a special aircraft on Tuesday evening.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister will see him off at the HSIA, according to a programme.
