Heatwave may intensify

Heatstroke claims nine lives in three days

The scorching heatwave sweeping across the country is expected to intensify in next three days beginning today.
Increased humidity may aggravate peoples discomfort.

On Monday, at least three people died of heatstroke in Dhaka, Shariatpur and Dinajpur raising the toll to nine in last three days.
At least three people died of heatwave in Pabna, Chuadanga, and Gazipur on Saturday.

The heatwave claimed three lives in Meherpur, Narsingdi, and Sylhet on Sunday.

Doctors attributed the deaths to heatstroke.

According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the temperatures are likely to rise from today.

BMD forecasts the possibility of rains or thunder showers, accompanied by temporary gusty or squally winds in one or two places in  Sylhet division, with isolated hailstorms.

The weather is expected to remain mainly dry with occasional partly cloudy skies elsewhere across the country.

The Met Office forecasts a slight rise in daytime temperatures and relatively stable nighttime temperatures across the country for Tuesday. However, the increase in moisture incursion could lead to a surge in discomfort for many.

The Met Office predicted that there is no chance of rainfall on Wednesday, as the weather is expected to remain predominantly dry with occasional partly cloudy skies throughout the country.

However, the ongoing heatwave is likely to persist throughout the day.

But day and night temperatures may fall slightly across the country.

Due to increase in moisture incursion, the discomfort may persist.

Meteorologist Bazlur Rashid told reporters, "Excessive vapour in the air may cause more discomfort to people."

He forecast heavy rains in a week or so that may bring some relief to the people.

He also forecast the possibility of light rains in Sylhet, Mymensingh and Chattogram and discounted the likelihood of rains elsewhere in the country.

The countrys highest temperature of 40.6 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Khulna, Jashore, and Chuadanga.
The lowest temperature of 20.6 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Dinajpur.

In Dhaka Division, the highest temperature was recorded in Tangail at 39.2 degrees Celsius.

According to Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute, the number of child pneumonia patients increased significantly in April compared to the corresponding period in previous years.

In April 2022 and 2023, Shishu Hospital admitted 226 and 312 pneumonia patients respectively.

In first 20 days of the current month Shishu  Hhospital  admitted 270 pneumonia patients.

According to DSH data, 1,869 children took treatment at Shishu Hospital between April 10 and April 20, and 143 of them were admitted.

Of them 451 children were pneumonia patients, 1,251 took treatment for common cold, and 167 for asthma.

The government closed schools and colleges for seven days due to the heatwave. Many universities including Dhaka University, Jgannath University and Chittagong University suspended in person classes and switched to online classes until further notice.

Since the first week of April, the country has been enduring scorching heatwave.
