Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said on Thursday that the upazila parishad election should be fair at any cost, if it fails, the democratic progress will be undermined.
Speaking with journalists at Agargaon Election Commission (EC) building before the meeting with Police and Administration officers he said, "Our Upazila Parishad elections will be held in four phases. We have to ensure safety of the voters and secure environment at all polling stations."
Awal said, "If we fail to conduct free and fair elections the progress of our democracy will be undermined. We hope that every election in future will be free and fair."
He asked high officials, including all divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, regional election officers and superintendents of police to ensure free and fair upazila parishad elections at any cost.
CEC has feared chaos and violence in the upcoming Upazila Parishad polls. He said no election-related violence will be tolerated so arrangements should be made so that people can vote safely and return home.
