Heat-caused diseases grip Bagatipara

BAGATIPARA, NATORE, Apr 27: Diarrhoea and pneumonia patients are increasing in Bagatipara Upazila of the district due to fierce heat.

Five-year-old Marium of Pourasabha area was affected by diarrhoea. She has been undergoing treatment in 31-bed Bagatipara Upazila Health Complex for the last three days.

Her father Manzurul Islam said, as her diarrhoea was continuing, she was taken to the hospital; now she is improving.

Three days back, Rima Khatun, 30, of Bajitpur area was admitted into Bed No. 4 of Women Ward with fever and vomiting tendency; now she is improving.

Akkas Ali, 60, of the same area, was admitted to Bed No. 12 of Male Ward on Sunday with urinary problem; his condition is improving.

Physicians said, the number of patients of fever, diarrhoea, pneumonia, typhoid, and heat stroke are increasing.

Hospital sources said, after Eid-ul-Fitr, patients have been double in the hospital. On Tuesday, 62 patients remained admitted to both male and female wards of the hospital.

Besides, on an average, about six patients are receiving treatment in the Outdoor. Most of them are children and adults and affected by diarrhoea.

Hospital authorities are hiccupping to face increasing pressure of patients.

A visit to the hospital found huge crowding of patients in front of the Emergency Department. Patients and relatives were seen on beds, floors and veranda.

Rahima Khatun said, "My husband developed tough breath amid fierce heat. I took him to the hospital. He has been treated and given medicines."

On-duty nurse Shahnaz Parvin said, at a time 8-10 patients are coming, "We can understand  whom to treat first; we are hiccupping."

Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr A: Razzak said, "We are facing both pressure of patients and doctors shortage. He himself and four medical   officers are trying to tackle the situation.

"Despite limitations, we are trying best to give maximum treatment," he added.

He advised people need to be aware and drink huge water; extra care needs to be taken for children; they should be bathed regularly; their sweating should be avoided.

He also advised all for drinking lemon juice, eating liquid food, avoiding spicy food and not outing without special needs.
