Omera reaffirms providing clean fuel for health and safety

The countrys largest LPG operator Omera reaffirms its commitment to providing environment friendly alternative energy solutions at a recent roundtable discussion titled "The Impact of LPG as Clean Fuel on Health and Safety."

In Bangladesh LPG has 3-billion-dollar investment, where private sectors have 98 percents stake and public sector has only 2 percents market share.

The discussion, held at Omeras corporate headquarters in city aimed to uphold the International Labor Organizations (ILO) mission to raise awareness and advocacy for safer and healthier workplaces.

The discussion delved into the current growth of Bangladeshs LPG sector, addressed regulatory hurdles faced by operators, and explored the health and safety implications of LPG.

Chaired by Nurul Amin, Chairman of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), panel discussants included Dr. MD. Helal Uddin NDC, Member BERC; Mohammad Faruque Hossain, Chief Inspector, Department of Explosives; Md Kamal Uddin Bhuiyan, BFM, Deputy Director Fire Service and Civil Defense Directorate; Major (Engr.) Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury (Retd), among others.
 
It also included RAJUK member Liakat Ali Bhuiyan, Sr. Vice-President of REHAB); Imran Hassan, Secretary-General, Bangladesh Restaurant Owners Association; Jahir Khan, President, Chefs Federation of Bangladesh; HM Hakim Ali, President, Bangladesh International Hotel Association and Muhammed Ahsanul Jabbar, Secretary General, LPG Operators Association of Bangladesh (LOAB).

Speakers discussed the impact of LPG on environment and health and said in comparison to other fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, LPG emits significantly fewer pollutants.
 
Furthermore, LPG combustion does not produce smoke, making it a cleaner option for indoor and outdoor use. In terms of environmental conservation, just one metric ton of LPG can save equivalent of 47 full-grown trees,

Moreover, using LPG for heating and cooking reduces the exposure to harmful pollutants, contributing to better respiratory health compared to traditional wood-fired methods.

The paper blamed malpractices in Bangladeshs LPG sector to factors such as cross-filling, inadequate awareness about LPG usage, misinformation in media communication, and improper design and installation of LPG systems.

Many factors act as catalysts in the development of this sector. These include- energy transition, urbanization, government initiatives, environmental concerns, ease of distribution, industrial and commercial applications etc.

The Chief guest Nurul Amin, told the meeting that cooking with wood would cause immense suffering in the past with smoke tearful smoke. Now the use of LPG made it easier and used at rural level.

Nurul Amin said, Omera LPG cylinders are safely stored and they sell at BERC fixed prices. He said this sector has unlimited potential and sector-wise planning is essential. It has a growing market all over.
 
Chief inspector Faruque Hossain, said cylinder explosions creates accident such as Baily Road fire which requires highest requirement.  He said as per international standard, it is mandatory to re-test cylinders in every ten years.

He said Omera is the only one to start this initiative and established a factory for refurbishment, he said.

Emphasizing the usage rules and warnings on each cylinder, he said  currently many operators have been given LPG licenses. They need to more responsible, especially in transporting and storing.  

RAJUK Member said it has been making separate structures for gas cylinders storage for a long time in buildings. RAJUK has plans to make gas tanks in the near-future.
