JAMALPUR, Apr 29: Five independent candidates protested a decision to nominate a party candidate in the upcoming Madarganj Upazila Parishad (UZ) election in the district on Monday.
In a press conference held at a hotel in the district town, the five candidates alleged, Awami League (AL) Organising Secretary Mirza Azam, MP, gave open support to Obidur Rahman Belal for the fourth time, flouting the opinions of grassroots level leaders and workers.
They further said, Mirza Azam also declared Belal and two others- vice-chairman and woman vice-chairman as official candidates.
Five protesting candidates are: Organising Secretary- District AL Abdullah Al Amin Chan, Joint General Secretaries of Madarganj Upazila AL Mosharaf Hossain Badal and Rayhan Rahmatulla Rimu, its Law Affairs Secretary Joynal Abedin Ayna and Work Affairs Secretary Md Faridul Islam.
In the press conference, they urged the AL high command to make the field open for independent candidates according to its party decision and to stop necked intervention of the MP in the Upazila Parishad polls, to be held on May 29 next.
