Upazila chairman candidate and also the joint secretary of BNP Jahangir Hossain Manik was reportedly attacked by his rivals at Sonapur Bazar of Bagatipara Upazila in Natore on Wednesday afternoon.
He is now undergoing treatment at Natore Modern Sadar Hospital.
Jahangir claimed that leaders and activists of opponent candidate Shariful Islam Sharif, also elder brother of former Awami League-backed MP Shariful Islam Bakul, had carried out the attack.
Dayarampur union unit AL president Shah Alam, who was present at the Bazar during that time, said Jahangir was holding a views-exchanging meeting with the people of the Bazar and suddenly the supports of Shariful attack Jahangir and his supports with iron rod, stick, leaving them injured.
Nannu Khan, Officer-in-charge of Bagatipara Police Station, said being informed they rushed to the spot. Locals informed them that supports of Shariful attacked Jahangir and his fellows. Now the injured are being treated at Natore Modern Sadar Hospital and their conditions are stable.
Meanwhile, returning officer of upazila polls and also the Additional Deputy Commissioner in Natore Md Masudur Rahman said they got the information about the incident. They will take action in this regard.
