Lightning kills four in Rangamati, Coxs Bazar

Four persons were killed by lightning strikes in separate incidents in two districts - Rangamati and Coxs Bazar, on Thursday.
RANGAMATI: Two people including a woman were killed by lightning strikes in separate incidents in Sadar and Baghaichhari upazilas of the district on Thursday.
The incidents took place at Sylheti Para under Sadar Upazila and in Rupkari Union under Baghaichhari Upazila of the district.
The deceased were identified as Nazir, 50, a resident of Sylheti Para in Rangamati Town; and Baharjan Begum, 55, of Rupkari Union under Baghaichhari Upazila.
Rupkari Union Parishad (UP) Chairman of Baghaichhari Upazila Jesmin Chakma said that Baharjan Begum, wife of Lal Mia of Muslim Block village under Rupkari Union, was killed by lightning strike while she was fetching cows amid the rain in the morning.
Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shirin Akter said the upazila administration has provided financial assistance of Tk 10,000 to the family of the deceased.
Dr Shaukat Akbar of Rangamati General Hospital said that one person was brought to the hospital from Sylheti Para of the town in the morning. He was killed by lightning.
PEKUA, COXS BAZAR: Two people including a teenage boy were killed by lightning strikes in separate incidents in Pekua Upazila of the district on Thursday.
The incidents took place in Magnama and Rajakhali unions under the upazila in the morning.
The deceased were identified as Didarul Islam, 30, a resident of Kolailladia area under Magnama Union, and Farhad Hossain, 14, son of Jamal Hossain of Charipara area under Rajakhali Union in the   upazila.
Magnama UP Panel Chairman Badiul Alam said Didar used to work in salt fields near his house. When a cloud appeared in the sky in the morning, he was struck by lightning while picking salt like other       workers.
Locals then rescued him in critical condition and took to Pekua Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, the panel chairman added.
On the other hand, at the same time, teenager Farhad Hossain was killed on the spot after being struck by thunderbolt while going to a field along with his father to collect salt.
Later on, the family members recovered his body from the field and took it to the house.
Local UP Member Nurul Abshar Badu confirmed the incident.
