KAPTAI, RANGAMATI, May 3: The moving of launches has been suspended with seven upazilas including Kaptai due to navigability crisis in Kaptai Lake in the district.

In these upazilas, about five lakh people are facing immense sufferings.

Kaptai Lake, the largest artificial lake in Asia continent, has dried.

The launch running has been stopped by Boat Owners Association with Kaptai, Bilaichhari, Longdu, Borkol, Jurachhari, Baghaichhari and Naniarchar upazilas.

The water drying in the lake has also caused fall in electricity production of the Karnaphuli Hydropower Plant.

Locals demanded an urgent dredging effort to get back its navigability.

Vast marshes in these upazilas have been turned into dry beds, with emergences of numerous submerged chars.

Launch operators said, boats are getting struck in the submerged char of Sublong Channel of the lake.

President of Rangamati Boat Owners Association Moin Uddin Selim said, due to the lake drying at an abnormal level, the launch operations with all upazilas was suspended on Saturday.

Main channels of the lake have got raised with sediment accumulation, causing the navigability crisis to the lake.

"We have to suffer every summer because of such de-navigability; people are suffering; we demand of the authorities for dredging the lake to restore its navigability," he added.
