Four killed in lightning strikes in Khagrachari

Four people, including a woman and her child, died and two others got injuries after lightning strikes in three Dighinala, Matiranga, and Ramgar upazilas of Khagrachari district on Sunday.

The deceased were Hasina Begum, 30, and her son Hanif Mia, 8, of Dighinala Upazila; Ganaj Marma, 55, of Ramgarh Upazila; and Samika Tripura, 26, of  Matiranga Upazila.


In Dighinala: A lightning struck at Sadek Mia house and caught fire during a thunderstorm around 5:30am.
Hasina Begum and her son Hanif Mia were inside the house and burnt to death but her 11-year-old son Md Habiz survived as he was outside the house, said Mahmuda Begum Lucky, chairman of Dighinala’s Merung Union.

Fire fighters from Dighinala Station rushed to the spot and doused the fire and recovered the bodies.

The bodies will be handed over to the families once official formalities are complete, said Nurul Haque, chief of Dighinala Police Station.

In Ramgarh: A man named Ganaj Marma, 50, died in a lightning strike on him when he was taking the cattle out of the rain and into the shed in the early morning.

In Matiranga: A woman named Samika Tripura, 26, was killed and her two children Arpan Tripura, 3, and Ahana Tripura, 6, sustained injuries when a lightning struck in Shahi Kabari Para in Matiranga’s Belchari Union.

Krishna Kamal Dey, chief of Matiranga Police Station, said Samika was critically injured by lightning as she was sleeping in her room early in the morning.

She was taken to Matiranga Health Complex, where she died while receiving treatment.
