SIRAJGANJ, May 5: The usual milk production is decreasing in dairy farms in the district with continuous dying of cattle from fierce heat, harming thousands of farms.

Severe heatwave has been continuing in the district for the last three weeks.

Dairy farm owners bath their cows and sprinkling water in farms; but it is not working; amid heatwave, cows can stay in fields; so cows are kept at home together.

Solvent farm owners are using generators to run electric fans for extra cooling.

According to farm sources, small and marginal farms have fallen into disarray due to 20-25 per cent milk production fall.

Department of Livestock Services (DoLS)-Sirajganj, officials are giving different types of advice including sprinkling water in farms and bathing cows. Yet cows and calves are dying.

According to DoLS sources, there are about 33,000 small and big dairy farms in the district, having total 15,06,253 cows; these cows include local species 4,51,876 and 10,54,377 crossbreed ones; and half of these are milky cows.

Besides, there are 2,795 buffaloes and 5,15,419 goats.

In 2022-23 financial year, 6.40 lakh tonnes of milk were produced in the district.

Different government-private organizations and processing companies collect about three lakh litres of milk daily from farms. On account of average Tk 55 per litre, the daily milk sale stands at Tk 1.65 crore per day.

Mild to moderate heat wave is flowing over Sirajganj; people and cattle have been suffocated due to severe heating.

Farm owners have fallen into huge losses.

Abdus Salam Bepari, a farm owner in Potajiar area in Shahzadpur Upazila, said, it has been difficult to protect cattle; various systems are being used to keep farm cool, but it is not working; and already four cows and  three calves died in his farm having over 150 cows.

He suffered a loss of about Tk 10 lakh.

He said, severe heat is burning grasses; milky cows are not getting grasses; they can eat normal feed amid heating; so the milk production has decreased.

"I am getting 200 to 2.25 litres of milk against previous 300 litres per day," he added.
