Pabna Sujanagar Upazila Parishad chairman Shanuzzaman Shahin and 10 of his accomplices were released from
RAB camp early Tuesday afternoon, 12 hours after they were detained while distributing cash taka among voters.
Maj Ehteshamul Haque Khan, Rapid Action Battalion-12 Pabna camp commander, said, "He was quizzed after detention. The cash money which was seized was within the limit of election expenditure. The seized money will be submitted to treasury and Shahin was released. We will futher investigate the matter and after that, the action will be taken."
After being released, Shahinuzzaman Shahin, also the upazila chairman candidate, said, "The money was being brought to pay all
election expenses. It was not being used for any dishonest means, it is totally valid money. I am a victim of political conspiracy."
Earlier around 12:30am on Tuesday, a elite force team arrested Shahin and 10 of his accomplices from Char Bhabanipur's Mujib embankment with two bags full of cash taka.
Later, at a press briefing, Maj Ehteshamul Haque said, "RAB members are patrolling regularly for holding coming peaceful and fair
UP polls. As part of that, when a elite force team was patrolling at Sujanagar bazar on Monday night, they arrested Shahinuzzaman Shahin while he was distributing the money among the voters.
Meanwhile, the supporters of Shahin started protest after the news of his detention spread. They staged demonstration blocking main road of Sujanagar bazar demanding his release.
Shahinuzzaman Shahin will contest in the coming upazila parishad elections for the post of chairman.
