The Chamber Court of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday cleared the way for the Election Commission to hold the by-election to Jhenaidah-1(Shailkupa) constituency, scheduled to be held on June 5.

Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice M Enayetur Rahim stayed a High Court order that postponed election for 21 days clearing the way for the EC to hold the election on the scheduled date.

The Chamber Judge came up with the stay order following a petition filed by Awami League-backed candidate Md Nayeb Ali Joardar challenging the HC stay order.

On May 6, the HC bench of Justice Md Zakir Hossain stayed for 21 days the process of holding the by-polls to Jhenaidah-1 constituency, following a petition filed by Nazrul Islam Dulal Biswas, an independent candidate who got the second highest votes in January 7 national election, seeking necessary directives.
