BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Wednesday said that the voters rejected the upazila parishad elections without falling into the trap of the Awami League's deception.
"Voters don’t need votes as the results are predetermined. Because of it, people were not interested in upazila parishad elections," he said while addressing a press conference at the party's central office at Naya Paltan in the capital.
Stating that people rejected the upazila parishad elections outright, Rizvi alleged that state sponsored terrorism has taken away the voting rights of people.
"The upazila parishads have been turned to an arena of dacoits and looters through looting, he said, adding that even such instances are there in which a person became the upazila chairman twice through the election without voters and became the owner of more than 100 bighas of land though law prohibits ownership of more than 60 bighas.
The BNP leader also mentioned that some of those who have become candidates for the second time have increased their income by more than 3,000 per cent compared with the income declared in their previous affidavit.
He said that someone's income increased by more than 1,000 per cent while in Gaibandha a candidate’s income increased by 4,000 per cent.
He also said rhetorically that one becomes owner of numerous elephants and horses once one becomes the chairman in the elections without voters.
"Therefore, the voters of the country have wholeheartedly rejected the upazila elections without stepping into the trap of Awami League’s deception," he said.
