FENI, May 9: Hands of Boro farmers in the district have been on their heads as their ripe Boro paddy fields have been submerged due to nor’wester wind and rain.

Most of the Boro fields have nosedived. Farmers suffered huge damages.

According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), as paddy has been ripe by about 80 per cent there is no apprehension of Chita(damage); but the harvesting cost is likely to increase a bit.

The DAE has advised farmers for lifting their paddies rapidly.

A quinquagenarian farmer of Jahanpur Village at Sharshadi Union in Feni Sadar Upazila Rafiqul Islam said, with his physical labour he cultivated Boro paddy on 80 decimals of contract land; his total farming cost stood at about Tk 50,000. But his fields have nosedived, after being hit by the nor’wester and the rain on Tuesday. Now he is concerned about whether he can lift half of his paddy.

Nosedived Boro Paddy fields were seen in other areas, such as Sonagazi, Chhagalnaiya, Fulgazi, Porshuram and Dagonbhuiya.

Farmer Abul Hossain said, he has cultivated Boro on 120 decimals of land; his fields have not been ripen fully; he concerns it may not be possible to lift 40 per cent of his fields.

Deputy Director of the DAE-Feni Ekram Uddin said, there is no possibility of higher damages; already 35 per cent paddy has been cut.

The Water Development Doard has been asked for taking measures to recede stranded water from paddy fields, he added.

Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer of Panchgachia Union in Sadar Upazila Pranab Chandra Mazumdar said, "We are working at the field level. Farmers are advised to lift paddy safely."

The  DAE sources informed, Boro was cultivated on  31,277 hectares (ha) of land against the target of 30,990 ha. The paddy production target has been fixed at 1,20,820 tonnes.
