Lightning kills four people in three districts

Four people including a woman were killed and six others injured by lightning strikes in separate incidents in three districts - Bagerhat, Chuadanga and Dinajpur, on Friday and Saturday.

BAGERHAT: Two people were killed and six others injured by lightning strike in Sarankhola Upazila of the district on Saturday morning.

The incident took place in Bandaghat area under the upazila at around 10:30 am.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Milon, 35, hailed from Balipara area under Indurkani Upazila in Pirojpur District; and Mostafa, 38, a resident of Morrelganj Upazila in Bagerhat.

Quoting locals, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sarankhola Police Station (PS) AHM Md Kamruzzaman Khan said some labourers were unloading a cargo ship in Bandaghat area of the upazila in the morning. As the rain started all of a sudden, they took shelter under a tin-shed shop.

After a while, thunderbolt struck them, leaving the duo dead on the spot and six others injured.
Being informed, police recovered the bodies.

The injured were rescued and taken to Sarankhola Upazila Health Complex, the OC added.

CHUADANGA: A farmer was killed by lightning strike in Damurhuda Upazila of the district on Saturday morning.

The incident took place in Patacuhra Village under the upazila at around 9 am.

The deceased was identified as Ahammad Mallik, son of late Kheder Mallik, a resident of the aforesaid area.

Local and the deceaseds family sources said Ahammad was working in his paddy field in the area at around 9 am. All of a sudden, rain was started, and at one stage, thunderbolt struck. He was critically injured at that time.

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed to Damurhuda Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Damurhuda PS OC Alamgir Hossain confirmed the incident.

PARBATIPUR, DINAJPUR: A housewife was killed after being struck by a streak of lightning in Parbatipur Upazila of the district on Friday afternoon.

The incident took place in Mostafapur Union under the upazila at around 5:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Beauty Begum, 40, wife of Abdus Sattar, a resident of Chak Jamini Kazipara Village under the union.

According to locals and the deceaseds family members, thunderbolt struck on Beauty in the afternoon while she was sitting in the balcony during the rain, which left her critically injured.

She was then rescued by the family members, but died on the way to a local hospital.

Ambari Police Investigation Centre In-Charge Sub-Inspector Nur Alam Siddique confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.
