Couple get life terms for killing handicapped son in Faridpur

A Faridpur court on Tuesday sentenced a father and a stepmother to life term imprisonment in a case over the murder of a son with disability by ingesting poison at Alfadanga upazila in the district around in 2013.

Ashok Kumar Dutta, the judge of Faridpur First Additional Session Judge Court also fined the couple Tk 20, 000 each, in default, they will have to suffer three months' more jail, said the court's public prosecutor Nawab Ali Mridha.

The convicts are identified as the father Helal Sheikh and step-mother Jesmin Begum, residents of the upazila. They both remain absconding.

According to the case statement, the convict Helal Sheikh and his first wife Jotsna Begum were the biological parents of the handicapped son and the victim Azizul. But Helal got married with Jesmin in 2013 and started torturing Jotsna.

At one stage, Jotsna lodged complaints with the upazila nirbahi officer and union parishad chairman seeking remedy.

During arbitration, the disabled son testified for his mother Jotsna, causing anger in his father Helal.

Later, the father in collaboration with the step-mother fed him poison which led him to death on July 26, 2013.

Mother Jotsna Begum filed a case against four people including the duo on the next day.

On June 30 in 2014, police pressed chargesheet against the duo before the court.

After completing legal procedures, the court handed down the judgment in the absence of the accused on Tuesday.
