Farmers find new way for irrigation in Bogura

BOGURA, May 14: Farmers are walking on the alternative system to irrigate their paddy fields in the district as deep tube-wells are failing to pump out water.

They had to purchase water from deep-tube-well operators at cash money. But now they are purchasing irrigation water from electricity-run pump owners on the agreement of giving the pump owners one fourth of their paddy output.

Due to heat wave, groundwater layers have gone up to 30-33 feet down in Shahjahanpur Upazila of Bogura, said Golam Kibria, executive engineer of Public Health Department.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) instructed farmers to keep 15-20 inch water in their paddy fields to protect these from heatwave.

By digging 15-20 feet, electricity-run pumps have been installed. These alternate pumps are providing water to farmers on that exchange system.

Beneficiary farmers said, the system is a facility for them as it does not need to give cash money to pump operators.

At present, they are spending the cash money in purchasing fertiliser and insecticide.

Farmer Jalal Uddin of Degalpara area in Shahjahanpur Upazila said, the groundwater layers have downed abnormally in several unions of the upazila including Khottapara and Madla.

Every year electricity-run pump owners sell water on the same exchange rate, they added.

Farmer Samad said, "In the case of having irrigation water from deep tube-wells we have to give money for each time. But under this system, pump owners are bound to give water according to requirement."
