Watermelon growers happy over bumper yield, good price

AMTALI, BARGUNA, May 18: Watermelon has yielded bumper in Amtali Upazila of the district.

Growers are happy to get higher prices of their produce. After adjusting production cost, they are    benefitting.    

According to sources at the Upazila Agriculture Office-Amtali, this season, watermelon was cultivated on about 5,000 hectares of land in the upazila.

Grower Ruhul Amin of Tepura Village at Holdia Union said, "I have been cultivating watermelon for the last several years. I suffered loss in the last year. For good weather, this years yielding has been good. I will make good profit."  

Grower Shahabuddin Hawladar of Dhankhali Union has cultivated watermelon in Ghughumari Village at Holdia Union. He said, he has cultivated watermelon on about 33 decimals.

Grower Jabbar Mia of Gulishakhali Village at Gulishakhali Union said, "Though I counted loss in the last year, this year I will make profit."   

Grower Rejaul Karim of Patakata Village at Chawra Union said, "We counted losses in the watermelon cultivation in the last year. This years yielding has been good."

It has been impossible for low-income people to purchase watermelon.

Consumer Hossain Mia said, "The demand of watermelon is good in Ramadan; but the price is higher; we can afford."

Warehouse owner Farid Mia said, "We are purchasing watermelon at higher rate from growers. So how we can sell at cheaper price?"

Amtali Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Isa said, sub-assistant agriculture officers inspected watermelon fields; they assisted growers properly.
