61 houses, 20 shops burnt in three districts

At least 61 houses and 20 shops were gutted by fire in separate incidents in three districts - Bandarban, Lalmonirhat and Gazipur, in two days.

BANDARBAN: At least 11 houses were gutted by fire that broke out in Thanchi Upazila of the district on Friday morning.

The fire broke out at around 10 am in Thuisapara area under Tindu Union of the upazila.

According to locals, the fire originated from a cooking stove in a house approximately 80 kilometres southeast of Thanchi Sadar, and engulfed the nearby houses soon, destroying 11 residences.

Public Relations Officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Shariful Islam stated that on information, BGB members rushed there and worked to control the fire in the remote area.

Additionally, three individuals injured in the fire were given medical treatment from Jinnapara BGB camp, he added.

Bhagya Chandra Tripura, chairman of No. 2 Tindu Union Parishad (UP), confirmed the incident, adding that the fire caused damage estimated at over Tk 12 lakh and the UP administration will provide assistance to the affected families as much as possible.

LALMONIRHAT: At least 20 shops were fully burnt in Kaliganj Upazila of the district on Thursday noon.

The incident took place in Tushbhandar Madhya Bazar area of the upazila at around 12 pm.

Quoting locals, Tushbhandar UP Chairman Nur Islam said the fire began at a pharmacy in the market at around 12 pm first, and it soon engulfed the adjacent shops, which left at least 20 businesses completely burnt.

On information, four units of the Fire Service rushed to the scene and controlled the blaze after about one and a half an hours of frantic effort, the UP chairman added.

The fire might have originated from an electric short circuit, said Deputy Director of Lalmonirhat Fire Service Station Wadud Sarker.

The affected traders claimed that goods worth about Tk 2.5 crore were completely destroyed due to the fire.

Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jahir Imam confirmed the incident, adding that necessary assistance will provided to the affected people.

GAZIPUR: Several shops and more than 50 tin-shed houses were gutted by fire in the city early Thursday.

The fire originated from a tea shop in Bhogra Bypass area of the city at around 3 am.

Md Ruhul Amin Mollah, senior station officer of Bhogra Fire Service, said that the fire soon spread other shops and tin-shed houses built on a land owned by one Rafi Matbor, a resident of Bhogra bypass area.

On information, two units of Bhogra Fire Service Station rushed to the scene. Later on, two more units of Konabari Fire Service Station joined them and brought the fire under control after about an hour of frantic effort.

Meanwhile, several shops and more than 50 tin-shed houses were burnt into ashes.

The exact cause of the fire and the extent of damage can be ascertained after investigation.

Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Tangail highway remained suspended for two hours due to the fire incident.
