JAMALPUR, May 23: A two-day Regional Agriculture Research-Extension Review and Programme Planning workshop began in the district on Monday.
The workshop has been arranged at the seminar room of Jamalpur Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS).
A total of 70 officers of different research institutions and farmer representatives of Jamalpur, Sherpur, Netrakona and Mymensingh districts took part in the workshop.
Director (Research) of the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI)-Gazipur Dr Md Abdullah Eusuf Akhanda inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest.
Chief Scientific Officer of RARS-Jamalpur Dr Md Manjurul Kadir presided over the inaugural session. Additional Director (In-Charge) of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE)-Mymensingh Region Salma Aktar spoke as special guest.
Chief guest Dr Md Abdullah Eusuf Akhanda said, quality research, not quantity, should be carried out so that a large number of people in the country could benefit.
The government allots huge money for research activities so you should be engaged in such kind of research which can contribute to the national economy and nutrition, he added.
He further said, the BARI has strengthened its research programme through the development of high yielding varieties and technologies; and it is also working for increasing cropping intensity and productivity through proper utilization of soil and water for socio-economic development of the farmers.
Researches evolve new varieties of crops and the extension department disseminates the varieties among farmers, he said again.
He laid emphasis on research-extension workshop for increasing safe food production across the country.
The workshop will conclude on May 21.
