A housewife was
slaughtered and her daughter-in-law was injured in an attack brought out reportedly by two robbers in
Jhenidah Sadar upazila on early Friday.
The deceased was identified as Fatema Khatun, 50, wife of an expat Abed Ali, a resident of Khalkula village under Ganna union of the upazila and the injured daughter-in-law was Bithi Khatun.
Quoting locals, a member of Ganna Union Parishad Chabdar Hossain said that the deceased Fatema Khatun used to live with her daughter-in-law Bithi Khatun in the house together as the victim's husband Abed Ali lives in Saudi Arabia and her son Mehedi lives in Malaysia. The duo break into the house on Thursday midnight to rob, after hearing the news of sending money from abroad.
At that time, they slaughtered Fatema Khatun as she recognized them and started screaming for help. The duo also attacked the victim's daughter-in-law Bithi Khatun, who was sleeping in the next room, and hacked on her troat when she rushed there to protect her mother-in-law. Subsequently, the robbers ran away with some cash and gold ornaments, thinking that she (Bithi) had also died.
Injured Bithi Khatun, ran to the house of neighbors and asked for a pen and paper. She then, wrote down the names of the two killers.
She was rescued and taken to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital where the physicians reffered her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as her condition was critical.
Amir Hossain, investigation officer of Betai Police Outpost, said that being informed by locals, police reached the spot and arrested two people on suspicion of being involved in the murder.
The arrested are Sagar Hossain, a resident of Durgapur village, and Sushanta Sarkar alias Kuti, of West Jhenidah village, said the police official.
Meanwhile, Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Shaheen Uddin said that during preliminary questioning, the arrested persons have confessed to be involved in the incident and the process to file a case in this incident was underway.
