Farmers happy over bumper Boro yield at Santhia

SANTHIA, PABNA, May 27: Farmers are delighted over bumper yielding of Boro paddy in Santhia Upazila of the district.
At present, they are passing busy time in cutting and threshing their Boro paddy in the upazila.

This season, farmers cultivated high yielding and highbred Boro paddy species at a large scale in the upazila.
According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension-Santhia, this season, Boro paddy was cultivated on 5,602  hectares (ha) of land in the upazila against targeted 5,490 ha, with a rice production target of 25,000 tonnes.
 
The paddy species included Bangabandhu Paddy-100, BRRI Paddy-89, 92, BINA Paddy-25.

A farmer of the Ghughudah Village Abul Kalam said, his five bighas of Boro paddy have yielded very good.

Farmers Alauddin of Gourigram Village, Abdul Mannan of Dhatalpur Village, Wazed Ali of Jourgachha Village and other farmers in different villages said, their per bigha Boro paddy cultivation cost including labour, irrigation, fertiliser, insecticide, cutting and threshing stands at Tk 12,000 to 14,000.

They are expecting per bigha paddy yielding at 30-35 maunds.

Santhia Upazila Agriculture Officer Sanjib Kumar Goswami said, "As incentives farmers were given seeds of rice species and fertiliser. Our sub-assistant agriculture officers inspected area-wise fields, held field day, farmers meeting and gave necessary advice. That is why this year Boro cultivation has yielded bumper. The weather was also favourable."
