Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA) on Monday announced to take two-hour break from academic activities except examination to press for their demand to withdraw Prottoy Scheme under the Universal Pension Scheme.

DU teachers will take the break from service from 10am to 12pm, according to the statement issued by DUTA President Prof Md Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan and the General Secretary Prof Prof Zeenat Huda.

Teachers of at least 35 public universities on Sunday held human chains at their respective campuses simultaneously demanding the government to scrap the Prottoy Scheme, branding it illogical and discriminatory.

The teachers claimed that the proposed pension scheme will curtail many existing advantages and discourage meritorious students from teaching profession.

Teacher leaders also announced that they will abstain from doing academic activities half a day on June 4 if the Prottoy Scheme is not withdrawn by June 3.

They said they will take break from all academic and administrative activities from July 1 if the government implements the Prottoy Scheme from the new fiscal year.

The Finance Ministry, in a notification on March 13, announced that all officers and employees, joining the service of autonomous, self-governing, nationalised, statutory or similar organisations and their subordinate institutions on or after July 1, 2024, would be included in the universal pension scheme.
