ECOFISH II holds training for Citizen Scientists, boat skippers at Teknaf

The USAIDs ECOFISH II-WorldFish Bangladesh-Teknaf team organized a two-day training programme on Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) for 30 Citizen Scientists and marine boat skippers at the Shamlapur Landing Center-based Fisheries Committee Office in Baharchhara, Teknaf recently, says a press release.

The training focused on critical aspects related to safety of life at sea, coastal and marine natural resources conservation, responsible fishing practices, and addressing negative impacts such as IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing and overfishing.

Participants were trained on existing government rules and regulations regarding fishing, livelihood improvement, and responsible fishing practices.

Dr Mohammad Mokarrom Hossain, Chief of Party, emphasized the importance of access to co-management activities and strengthening capacity of diversified fisheries stakeholders for coastal and marine natural resources management.

He called for collaboration between Co-management members and relevant stakeholders, including government and non-government departments.

Dr Md. Sharif Uddin, Scientist in Adaptive Fisheries Co-management provided expert guidance on SOLAS and advised fishermen to wear life jackets during fishing operations.

Md Delwar Hossain, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer, Teknaf, Department of Fisheries, attended as the Chief Guest. He highlighted fishing compliance issues in the Bay of Bengal. He also urged everyone to refrain from fishing during the 65-day marine fishing ban from May 20 to July 23, 2024.

Technical Officer SCMFP Md. Masud Rana and Md. Belal Uddin, General Secretary of the Shamlapur Landing Center-based Fisheries Co-management Committee, were also present during the training.

Research Associate Shaheed Nasrullah Al Mamun and Research Assistant Md. Sohel Rana from ECOFISH II facilitated the training.
At the programs conclusion, life jackets were distributed among the trained boat skippers.
