JOYPURHAT, May 29: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced 10 people to life-term imprisonment for killing a farmer in Kalai Upazila in 2015.
Joypurhat Additional District and Sessions Judge Nurul Islam handed down the verdict at noon.
At the same time, the court also fined the convicts Tk 1 lakh each, and in default, they will have to suffer two more years in jail.
The condemned convicts are: Joynal Mandal, Mozammel Haque, Mofazzal Hossain, Mostafa, Mosfar Ali, Mahfuzar, Masud, Mamunur Rashid, Samsuddin and Belal Hossain. All of them are residents of Awara Kalimohar Village under Kalai Upazila.
Additional Public Prosecutor of the court Abu Nasim Md Shamimul Imam Shamim confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement, the convicts hacked two persons, named Saidul Islam and Shariful Islam, of the same village with sharp weapons over a land dispute on July 5, 2015. Later on, Saidul Islam succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on July 5, 2015 while undergoing treatment.
The deceaseds father Abdus Samad, being the plaintiff, filed a murder case with Kalai Police Station in this regard.
After investigation, the investigative officer of the case Inspector Biswajit Barman submitted the charge-sheet to the court on November 26, 2015.
Following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Tuesday after examining the case records and taking depositions of 22 witnesses.
