A life-term convict has been arrested in a much-talked about rape case at Bhasantek area in the capital.
Convict Md Sumon, 31, was arrested by a team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-2 from the DMP's Uttara West Police Station area early Sunday (June 2) afternoon after remaining absconding for four years.
Arrested life-term convict Sumon is the son of late Nurul Huq Mia of village Astagram in Kishoreganj district.
RAB-2's senior assistant director (Media) Senior ASP Shihab Karim said the victim lived with her grandmother at a rented house at Bhasantek area in Dhaka. Brother-in-law Sumon used to tease her whenever he found her alone. But, the teen girl could not tell it anyone. On March 26, 2018, the brother-in-law Sumon had raped her after she returned to her grandmother's house from her sister's house.
As the matter came to light, the victim filed a rape case at Bhasantek Police Station being plaintiff. After arrest, Sumon remained in jail for two years, but fled away after receiving bail from court. Later, the investigation officer of the case submitted chargesheet to the court against the accused after investigating into the case.
When the accused remained absconding, a court awarded him life-term rigorous prison sentence and fined Tk 1 lakh, in default, six months' more jail sentence. Besides, the court issed arrest warrant against him.
Later, Bhasantek Police Station gave responsibility to the RAB-2 to arrest the convict. Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB-2 arrested Sumon at about 1:00pm on Sunday conducting a raid at Uttara West Police Station area with the help of information technology. He was later handed over to Bhasantek police station.
