A Chattogram court on Sunday (June 2) sentenced former CEO of the e-commerce platform 'Evaly' Mohammad Rasel, and his wife and chairman Shamima Nasrin to one year in jail in a bank cheque dishonour case.
Chattogram 7th Joint Metropolitan Sessions Court Judge Md Mohiuddin handed down the verdict.
The court's assistant public prosecutor Advocate MS Hossain Shahed confirmed the matter.
He said the court also fined the couple Tk 1.80 lakh and issued arrest warrants against them as they are absconding.
According to the case statement, one Jasim Uddin Abid, a resident of Hamzarbagh area under Panchlaish Police Station in the port city, paid Evaly Tk 1.80 lakh in April 2021 to purchase a motorcycle.
However, Evaly did not deliver the bike. Later, Evaly gave him a cheque, which was dishonoured by the bank concerned.
Later, Jasim Uddin Abid filed a case against Rasel and his wife with the Chittagong court on October 2, 2021.
On September 16, 2021, Rasel and Shamima were arrested from their Mohammadpur residence in the capital in a case filed over fraud and embezzlement.
Shamima was released on bail in April 2022, and Rasel was released on bail on December 19, 2023.
