Joypurhat court on Monday sentenced 10 members of a family to life term imprisonment for killing a farmer at Khetlal upazila in the district in 2011.
Md Nurul Islam, the judge of Joypurhat 1st Additional District and Sessions Court, delivered the verdict in the afternoon.
The court also fined the convict Tk 50,000 each, in default, they will have to suffer two more years of rigorous imprisonment.
Two accused of the case were also acquitted by the court as the allegations brought against them were not proven.
The convicts are Sabdul, his wife Fatema Begum and his sons-- Helal, Alam Hossain, Idris Ali, Rejaul Islam; and Alam's wife Farjana Begum, Helal's wife Lilifa Begum, and one Ziaul's wife Futti Begum, and Helal Uddin-- all are residents of Mahabbatpur village under the upazila.
According to prosecution, the convicts attacked the victim Samsul Islam on October 31 of 2011, when he along with his father and brother went to cultivate a land in the area, leaving him critically injured.
He was first taken to Joypurhat General Hospital and later, Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Later, the victim's wife Merina Begum filed a
murder case with Khetlal Police Station accusing 12 persons.
After hearing the witnesses and examining evidences, the court punished the ten and acquitted two accused, confirmed assistant public prosecutor of the court Khaza Shamsul Alam Bulbul.
