Former President of Dhaka Universitys Salimullah Muslim Hall unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Mehedi Hasan and his associate Shahidul Islam were sent to jail on Monday for extorting from traders at Palashi Bazar in the city. Mehedi and Shahid were produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Monday. Magistrate Rashedul Alam sent them to jail.
Eye witnesses told reporters that Mehedi and his associate Shahid attacked two traders, Nazrul Islam and Mahbubul Haque, with machete when they refused to give money around 11:00pm on Sunday.
Former General Secretary of Palashi Dokan Malik Samity Mahbubul Haque said, "They first demanded money from trader Nazrul Islam. When he refused, they beat him up. When Nazrul fled the scene, the attackers came to hack me with the machete. Traders then rescued me, caught the duo, and gave them a good thrash." He said that they were, later, taken to the Chawkbazar Police Station.
Earlier Bangladesh Chhatra League suspended Mehedi from the President post of the hall unit in 2014 for engaging in anti-disciplinary activities.
He was arrested from Salimullah Muslim Hall with drugs in 2021.
